Overview:
We are seeking Veterinary Assistants to join our team. Our culture values veterinary assistants and their essential role in the clinical team. Boundary Bay Veterinary Specialty Hospital (BBVSH) has board-certified specialists in surgery, oncology, neurology, critical care and internal medicine. Each department works collaboratively with other services within BBVSH, as well as accepting referrals from other specialty and general practices.
Responsibilities and Duties of Veterinary Assistants:
- Care of hospitalized and boarding patients including cage cleaning, exercising, feeding, observation for signs of illness, parasites and disease control, walking, laundry, bathing, and keeping animals clean.
- General cleaning of public and employee areas, building and yard maintenance to maintain clean, odor-free, and attractive environment. Housekeeping and laundry for all areas.
- Ability to restrain for procedures performed by RVT’s and DVM’s, knowledge of common diseases, their symptoms and means of transmission, administration of oral medications, and assessment of change in animal status
- Professional, positive, and helpful attitude when contacting pet owners, knowledge of preventative health care recommendations to answer questions and assisting in marketing veterinary services from which their pet would benefit.
- Knowledge of discharging patients, billing out, boarding, and hospitalized patients from admission to discharge, knowledge of AVIMARK and Smartflow, and other front desk procedures in order to assist receptionists/liasons.
- Knowledge of how to complete laboratory requisitions for outside labs, and how to run in-house laboratory equipment.
- Animal restraint, nail trimming, ear cleaning, client education, computer transaction entry.
- Unpacking, and stocking of hospital supplies, and informing Inventory Manager when supplies need to be ordered.
- Prep patients for surgery.
- Assist in surgery.
- Prepare surgery packs.
- Disinfect surgical suite.
- Assist in radiology.
- Keep treatment area, runs, and kennels clean.
- Follow workplace safety guidelines concerning safety and handling of hazardous materials.
- Follow established hospital protocols regarding radiographs, animal handling, etc.
- Clean and straighten up exam rooms, treatment and lab areas.
- Restock exam rooms with supplies as needed. Assist other staff members to keep the public areas of the practice clean and well maintained.
- Clean and maintain all medical equipment.
- Provide support to RVT’s and DVM’s as needed.
- Exercise appropriate medical knowledge. Utilize in-house educational materials and continuing education provided by the hospital.
- Serve as a representative of the hospital, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration, and a positive attitude in all interactions with clients, patients and other members of the hospital staff.
- Demonstrate initiative and teamwork in everyday duties by seeking other work to do during slack times, assisting other employees within the practice, and filling in for other employees as needed.
- Organize work area and exercise time management skills to maximize personal efficiency within the hospital. Prioritize tasks and handle multiple tasks in a calm, organized manner.
- Strong physical capabilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Responsibility of helping to train/mentor/coach all new employees.
Skills and Expertise Required in Veterinary Assistants:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Graduate of an Accredited VA Program (an asset)
- 2 years experience as a VA (an asset)
- Excellent restraint skills and comfort with aggressive/fractious animals
- Ability to multi task and be efficient while doing so
- Have used or are familiar with AVIMARK/Smartflow (an asset)
- Have the ability to remain calm during emergent situations
- Possession of strong communication skills
